Visa and Master Charge are the two most popular foreign bank issued credit cards accepted in China. Most larger hotels and many restaurants, if they cater to foreigners, will accept these credit cards.

Purchases at the larger departments stores in Wuxi can also be made using these cards. The Bank of China will also issue cash advances on foreign bank credit cards.  

Outside of these larger retail outlets credit cards are not accepted. This is changing. If in doubt ask before eating a meal and then charging it to your credit card.

While you may have a credit card which can be used all over the world, but paying that credit card bill is probably next to impossible if it has not been issued by a Chinese bank. Chinese banks do not process international credit card payments. This will have to be done via your exisiting bank.

The easiest solution to this problem is to apply for, and receive a Chinese credit card issued by the Bank of China, which can be paid off in RMB, but also be used outside of China.
