bathhouseIf you mention to an Expat your going to a bath house (especially North Americans) they look at you a little funny. Public, group bathing rituals are not something that we practice and to make matters worse we associate them with places gay men go to have gay sex.

Chinese water culture however takes a different, more practical and less sexual view of public bathing. You can find a bath house that follows the North American model, but the majority of bath houses in China are simply places to get clean, relax and have a foot or body massage.

During the colder months, especially if you decent lack bathroom heating, heading to a bath house for a sit in a hot tub and shower just make really good sense. One should not however confuse Chinese water culture with Japanese public bathing pratacities. In a Chinese bath house men and women enter and bath in seperate areas. After bathing however you can join each other in a private or public room to relax with a massage or just watch TV together.

Last saturday night my wife, son and I spent a relaxing couple of hours getting clean and having a foot massage at the Landison Spa at Number 8, Jincheng East Road. Located on the fourth floor this new bath house spa in the Wuxi New Distric is family orientated, very clean, well maintianed. It is also reasonably priced. We spent 380 RMB over the course of the night for a private room, foot massage and drinks for two adults. (Children cost 28 RMB to enter Adults 38 RMB)

I enjoy a nice massage and have frequented several places around Wuxi with various results.

One day I went to a bath house located close to Jangnan University. While I am not shy I don't always feel comfortable walking into a shower room filled with Chinese men. Too many prison moves perhaps? Before i went to this bath house I took a picture of the menu with my mobile phone, printed it, and had my Chinese girlfriend translate it for me so I knew the cost for a massage.

Armed with the printout I went to the bathe house and approached the front desk clerk and showed her the massage I wanted. of course they all smiled and jumped to their feet. After taking my shoes like I was at a bowling alley I was ushered to a communal shower and spa room. After being issued some pajamas and declining a shower (as I had just taken one before I left my room) i showed the spa dude my menu choice. He smiled and sent me to the 3rd floor.

Walking out the elevator I encounter a dimly lit room filled with girls wearing evening dresses...

Seeing I had several pretty girlfriends I really wasn't interested in THAT kind of service and wanted my back rubbed for a few hours. So the Pimp comes over and says in broken English "You want girl!"... i said no no, want massage and showed him my printed menu. He says, "Go 4th floor".

4th floor is the REAL massage place.

I get a 90 minute massage complete with candle cupping.

Price is good service is ok.

being a laowai may have have advantages and disadvantages as every person working in the place comes in to gawk at you and smile.

BUT, they are friendly and my back felt better after. For 68 rmb.

*sigh*

Why is it, whenever a story about a Chinese bath house comes around, some bloke gets on and registers his rather embarrising anecdote about when he first discovered that virtually all the bathhouses in China offer "special massages?" The story always ends with how he got away from it and got his legitimate massage.

Come on Scotsman, spill it

I have a story about an intern who once worked for me for six months.

Seems he was walking down the street and was out side the old Sheraton. I guy came up to him and said

"message, message"

He said, "You have a message for me?"

The pimp said "yes, yes I have message for you."

So the intern thinking that I had sent this guy followed him inside the building. They had to walk through a couple of rooms and the kid thought he would get lost and was a little worried about following this guy, but they finally got to a room.

At this point he realized that it was not a "message" but a "massage" the guy was talking about. The kid was a virgin and well he would not have planned this he figured he would go along for the ride.

He was smart enough to ask for the price and not give the guy money before the massage. The guy wanted 500 RMB for the massage.

He was also asked if he wanted a girl or a boy. He picked a girl (seems I didn't pick a stupid gay intern but a stupid straight intern) and then went to a room expecting that he was going to get a very special massage.

Turns out he got a nice back rub for 500 RMB and was too embarrassed to ask for more or his money back!

I wonder how often this happens!
