Public transportation in Wuxi is fast, safe and inexpensive. The Wuxi Kowloon Public Transportation Company was awarded the public bus service franchise in Wuxi and operates a fleet of more than 1,600 buses. on 106 routes, employing over 5,000 drivers .
Bus fare is 1/2 RMB per ride depending on the type of bus. Deposited the fare in the box at the front of the bus. You can also purchase a monthly bus pass provided you are a resident of Wuxi. Transfers can be obtained from the driver. Buses are well maintained, but as with most public transportation in China, the system can get extremely crowded during rush hour.
Bus passes can be purchased at your local Wuxi Post Office, you may however need to get a local to purchase one for you since they sometimes, but not always ask for your Identity card, listing Wuxi as your residence.
Wuxi is a safe city, pickpockets however have been reported working on some crowded downtown routes in Wuxi. It is advisable to keep track of your valuables at all times. Women however can use bus routes day or night without fear of being grouped or harassed.
Bus routes are marked with a number clearly visible on front of the bus. Routes can be identified at street level by bus signs indicating predetermined stops. There does not appear to be a master bus route map available in English. Local shops however sometimes have bus routes posted and maps can be purchased from them. These are only available in Chinese.
Long Distance Bus Wuxi
There are long distance buses, which get you directly to the airports from Shanghai, Hongqiao and Pudong, and Nanjing. The largest bus station in Wuxi is the Wuxi Long Distance Bus (North) Station, situated to the north of the city. The station operates services across Jiangsu Province, as well as various other provinces such as Anhui, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Hubei, Shandong and Jiangxi. Cities accessible from this station include Shanghai, Nanjing, Changzhou, Zhenjiang, Yangzhou and Suzhou.
The Wuxi West Long Distance Bus Station mainly operates routes within Wuxi and cities in Jiangsu such as Suzhou, Qingdao, Nanchang and Wuhan. Buses leave frequently for Yixing city. The Zhoushanbang Bus Station is relatively small and services towns within Jiangsu province as well as in Hangzhou and Ningbo.
